Improved Lab Sustainability Through use of Liquid Platinum
Scientists in Australia have discovered an innovative way to save both money and environmental damage by using platinum in its liquid state. This could change the face of the industry if the discovery is able to be scaled. Platinum is commonly utilised for laboratory equipment manufacture in the chemical industry.
It is possible to evade lab procedures that require high levels of heat by putting tiny quantities of liquid platinum in with liquid gallium; this was found by groups from both RMIT Melbourne and New South Wales Sydney.
Typically, solid platinum is melted at over 1770 degrees, making it a costly reaction
But when coupled with a very small amount of liquid platinum (one thousandth of the amount of solid-state platinum required), the compound may be dissolved.
This new method means that significantly less platinum is needed per reaction, therefore increasing the sustainable potential for using the element. Additionally, the reduced level of heat needed would result in more environmentally friendly industrial operations.
