Johnson and Johnson and PharmaMar reveal trabectedin plans

1st June 2006

Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development and PharmaMar have announced plans to file for a new drug application with the US Food and Drink Administration.

Trabectedin is an investigational treatment for soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Johnson and Johnson and PharmaMar state that trabectedin would enable multi-modal mechanism of action that interferes with a variety of cell processes.

The application will be made once STS phase two trials have been completed and when the phase three trial has begun. PharmaMar, which specialises in “marine-derived medicines” states that this should mean that that the application itself will be made in the next two months.

It has also been announced today that trabectedin is currently involved in a phase three trial for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical Research states that although trabectedin is now manufactured using chemical synthesis, it was originally isolated from the marine tunicate Ecteinascidia turbinata.
