Johnson and Johnson company acquires SurgRx

Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson & Johnson company, has announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately-owned advanced bipolar tissue sealing system developer SurgRx.

SurgRx develops this sealing system for the EnSeal family of devices.

Johnson & Johnson said this acquisition will provide a new energy platform to Ethicon Endo-Surgery to complement its Harmonic ultrasonic medical devides used to perform laparoscopic and open procedures.

The aim of the acquisition is to combine complementary technologies to extend the company’s reach into a number of important surgical activities and offer enhanced options for patients and doctors.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Karen Licitra, company group chairman and worldwide franchise chairman at Ethicon Endo-Surgery, said: “Ethicon Endo-Surgery and SurgRx share a commitment to innovation for the surgeons and patients who depend on our products.”

She added the combination of the EnSeal and Harmonic technologies will put the company in a better position to address a number of different procedure needs.

In October 2007, Ethicon Endo-Surgery announced the launch of its Harmonic Focus curved shears.

These are an energy device designed for use in open surgeries to enable delicate dissections.
