Johnson and Johnson reports ‘unification’ of bio oncology research and development

Johnson & Johnson has announced that the newly-formed Ortho Biotech Oncology Researchers & Development (ORD) has united its biopharmaceutical oncology research and development assets.

This announcement comes as ORD announces study results relating two three compounds at the 2008 annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.

ORD is presenting study results for Hdm2, c-Met and HDAC inhibitors at the conference, reporting that its scientific approach to cancer involves the examination of the cancer cell itself and its microenvironment, or surrounding tissue.

The firm is looking to identify compounds that can block or inhibit the interaction between the cancer cells and this microenvironment in order to reduce their ability to survive.

William Hait, senior vice-president and worldwide head of ORD, said: “ORD is a new research and development organisation that unites the biotechnology and pharmaceutical oncology efforts of several Johnson & Johnson companies with the goal of transforming cancer into a chronic or curable disease.”

He added that ORD encompasses capabilities and expertise across a number of disciplines in order to align cancer treatments with modern biology, prioritise emerging and existing opportunities and enhance patients’ lives.

In November 2007, Johnson & Johnson announced that its women’s leadership initiative had been named as the first winner of the ACE award from the Healthcare Businesswomen Association.
