Johnson & Johnson to close Scottish surgical suture factory

A surgical suture factory in Scotland is to be closed by Johnson & Johnson as part of a wider restructuring effort.

The company is overhauling its medical devices division and the Ethicon site at Livingston is deemed to be surplus to requirements.

Production of its surgical sutures will instead be moved to its larger sites in Mexico, Brazil and the US.

Commenting on the move, Johnson & Johnson said: "We have put forth these proposals in the interest of reducing complexity and increasing agility to better serve the needs of customers and patients in today's evolving healthcare marketplace."

A consultation on the proposals has been opened to find the best solution for all parties.

David Mundell, the Scottish Secretary, added that the UK government will continue to hold discussions with the company to help secure the future of the site.

Johnson & Johnson also has a facility in Inverness, with the Lifescan Scotland site producing diabetes products such as blood glucose monitoring systems.
