Junior doctors’ strike plans for September called off

A planned five-day strike by junior doctors planned for later this month has been suspended by the British Medical Association (BMA).

The organisation announced plans for industrial action from September 12th to 16th last week as part of a broader programme of strikes protesting the government's threat to impose an unpopular contract on the sector.

However, the BMA said it has since been informed by NHS England, working doctors and patient groups that the NHS would not be able to cope with the notice period for industrial action given.

In the interests of safeguarding patients, the September strike action has now been called off, though the five-day walkouts scheduled for October, November and December will still go ahead as planned.

The BMA added that the cancellation of this month's planned strikes should not absolve health secretary Jeremy Hunt of criticism for his handling of the row.

BMA junior doctors committee chair Ellen McCourt said: "The BMA has repeatedly said that it will call off further action if the secretary of state stops his imposition of the contract, listen to the concerns of junior doctors, and works with us to negotiate."
