KCI reports positive data from Prevena therapy study

KCI has announced the publication of a new study showing the benefits its Prevena Incision Management System can deliver for patients undergoing cardiac surgery via median sternotomy.

In the research, published in the International Wound Journal, it was shown that patients treated using Prevena over closed incisions for the first six to seven days reported a significantly lower infection rate than conventional dressings.

It has previously been shown to help speed healing, reduce complications and improve the lives of patients when used in the management of closed surgical incisions. It can also reduce expenses for healthcare providers.

Post-sternotomy wound infection is a serious, potentially fatal complication of cardiac surgery that often requires additional surgery, making solutions like Prevena highly valuable.

Dr Ron Silverman, chief medical officer at KCI, said: "This is the largest clinical study demonstrating the effectiveness of Prevena Therapy. It adds to the growing body of evidence that supports the use of Prevena Therapy over closed surgical incisions."

This comes after another study published earlier this year revealed that Prevena can also significantly decrease the incidence of groin surgical site infections in patients after vascular surgery.
