KCI’s Prevena demonstrates infection prevention benefits

KCI has published data from a recent clinical study of the Prevena Incision Management System, demonstrating its benefits in the prevention of surgical site infections (SSIs).

Evidence presented at the Society for Vascular Surgery Conference in Washington DC earlier this month showed that Prevena can help reduce the incidence of groin SSIs in patients undergoing vascular procedures, when combined with standard perioperative infection prevention and meticulous surgical technique.

This could be an important discovery given the impact these infections can have on patients' quality of life, as well as the costs they generate for hospitals.

Prevena is intended to manage closed incisions that continue to drain following sutured or stapled closure and has been available in the US since June 2010.

Joe Woody, president and chief executive officer of KCI, said: "Prevena is truly transforming how surgical incisions are healed, thereby expanding our surgical solution platform."

Earlier this year, Mr Woody took up a new role on the board of directors for the parent company of KCI and sister business LifeCell, allowing him to provide greater strategic insight into the running of the company.
