Kleanbus Reduces Electric Bus Timeline by Six Years

Kleanbus, which has 80 years’ experience in powertrain design, drives their repower programme to meet both environmental and social responsibility goals. They believe repowering is the quickest and most economical move towards a zero emission future for busses in the UK, exchanging a diesel engine or hybrid powertrain from a functioning bus and with a completely electric powertrain.

Kleanbus’ co-founder, Joe Tighe, explained that “with 97% of UK buses powered by diesel engines, and a staggering 35,000 of them on the road, the country faces a major challenge to rapidly decarbonise this transport sector. Replacing these vehicles with new electric buses is very expensive for private companies and government subsidies will take years given fleet turnover rates.”

The buses have great economic potential at just one fifth of the price of an electric alternative. Kleanbus describes its powertrain system as technologically “agnostic, nimble and adaptable”.

The Kleanbus repower process includes a thorough automobile assessment, followed by a gutting of the original diesel engine and internal combustion mechanisms. Next, experts will evaluate the interior, using advanced technology to create a viable prototype, before fitting an e-drive, making the physical changes, thoroughly trialling and signing it off.

Joe Tighe concluded: “The potential for repowered buses is huge. They could bring about fully electric bus fleets six years earlier than relying on roll out of new zero emission buses alone. Potentially saving of over 4Mt CO2 and deliver health benefits of improved air quality.”
