L Catterton Adds Partner Pet to Portfolio Including Alliance, Butternut Box, and JustForDogs

After a heavy capital input into Shanghai Enova Products, private equity company L Catterton has added Partner Pet to its portfolio of pet food assets in China.

With previous investment into Shanghai Enova, which owns leading premium pet food brand Pure & Natural, Partner Pet expands its visibility within the premium pet market.

Partner Pet was founded in 2016 and has recently expanded into the wet food segment in addition to producing freeze-dried options. Their product offering is available both online and in over 20 thousand outlets in China.

L Catterton said that Partner Pet’s sales had “risen twelvefold over the last three years.” Unfortunately, neither the magnitude of the investment nor the precise sales data for Partner Pet were disclosed.

Managing Partner for L Catterton’s Asia division, Scott Chen, explained that “China’s pet-food market has demonstrated resilient growth over the past few years and its expansion is expected to continue unabated.”

With a funding round for UK dog food company Butternut Box, addition of Alliance Animal Health to the Shanghai Enova, and a 2017 venture into the US JustFoodForDogs, the company has increased the scope of its pet food investment portfolio.

In 2020, the company sold a controlling share in Inspired Pet Nutrition to Capvest and transferred to another UK company, Lily’s Kitchen, to industry giant Nestlé.

CEO of Partner Pet, Zhi Qiao, explained that “L Catterton’s track record of creating value in the pet-food space is second to none and we believe we can leverage its proven operating capabilities to accomplish our mission.”
