Leica Microsystems and TrueVision 3D Surgical expand collaboration
Leica Microsystems has announced an expansion of its existing partnership with TrueVision 3D Surgical into the arena of ophthalmology.
The broadened alliance will see 3D technology incorporated into Leica Microsystems' entire line of ophthalmic microscopes, driving more precise patient outcomes, enhancing surgeon ergonomics and facilitating communication among operating room staff.
This collaboration previously resulted in the availability of the first surgical microscope integrated with TrueVision's 3D intelligent visualisation technology for neurosurgery last year. The market response to this product offering has been extremely positive.
Dr Heinrich Dreyer, vice-president of Leica Microsystems' medical division, said: "This integration creates a seamless, upgradeable platform that will help surgeons gain a more realistic perception of anatomical structures as a result of the depth perceived in 3D."
A demonstration of the new fully integrated visualisation platform – including a Leica M822 ophthalmic microscope with TrueVision 3D inside – was given at this year's Frankfurt Retina Meeting and broadcast live to an audience of 1,200 surgeons.
Taking place at the Congress Centre in Mainz last month, the monitor-guided retinal surgery proved a success.
