Lilly praised for efforts to combat tuberculosis

3rd June 2010

Lilly has won praise from the Global Business Coalition (GBC) on HIV/Aids, TB and Malaria for its initiatives to combat diseases in poorer areas of China.

The organisation has presented its annual GBC Awards for Excellence in Business Action, honouring Lilly with the Community Investment accolade.

This was presented in recognition of the company’s MDR-TB partnership scheme, which is centred on raising awareness of the symptoms and treatment options for tuberculosis in Qinghai.

Lilly was credited with having helped a total of 3.5 million people with its community investment programme, which involved extensive training and local education schemes.

It was one of a number of pharmaceutical firms to win praise from the GBC, which also presented awards to Boehringer Ingelheim and Sanofi-aventis.

In the coming days, Lilly will attend the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where it will present clinical data on a number of new treatments which it hopes will play a role in “changing the way we treat cancer”.
