Lilly reports positive breast cancer data for Verzenio

Lilly has announced interim results from a new clinical trial showing the benefits its drug Verzenio can offer in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.

Data from the phase III MONARCH 3 study showed that Verzenio, when administered in combination with a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor (NSAI), delivered a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival and objective response rates compared to NSAI therapy alone.

The risk of progression or death was reduced by 46 percent in patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer, with more than half of patients with measurable disease treated with Verzenio achieving a greater degree of tumour shrinkage compared to an NSAI alone.

Based on this data, Lilly believes that Vearzenio could represent a new standard of care in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.

Dr Levi Garraway, senior vice-president for global development and medical affairs at Lilly Oncology, said: "We now have evidence from two randomised trials showing that the addition of Verzenio to an endocrine therapy provides clinical benefit to women with metastatic breast cancer and we look forward to further advancing our MONARCH clinical programme."
