Lilly study shows bone strength benefits of Forteo

Lilly has published data from a new study showing the benefits offered by its osteoporosis therapy Forteo in improving bone strength.

The company has conducted an 18-month trial assessing the effects of the drug on vertebral and proximal femoral strength, as well as the relationship of these effects to changes in underlying volumetric bone mineral density of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

It was found that Forteo is able to improve the strength of the spine and hip bones compared to baseline, following assessment using finite element analysis of quantitative CT scans.

Dr Kelly Krohn of Eli Lilly and Company said: "Studies that reinforce the already established efficacy of medications can help healthcare professionals determine the right medicine to treat their patients with osteoporosis."

Forteo is also used among male osteoporosis patients who are at high risk of suffering bone fractures due to their condition.

Additional research released by Lilly this week explored the functionality of Forteo further by highlighting the mechanistic differences between the compound and zoledronic acid.
