London Mayor to ban Junk food adverts on London Transport
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has put forward a proposal to ban all junk food adverts in a bid to tackle the ‘ticking time bomb’ of child obesity.
“I am determined to do all I can to tackle this issue with the powers I have and help Londoners make healthy food choices for themselves and their families.” Said Mr Khan, “That is why I am proposing to ban adverts for harmful junk food from our entire Tube and bus network.”
The adverting ban forms part of the Mayor’s London Food Strategy, banning all unhealthy food and drink adverts that are high in fat, salt and sugar on London underground, overground, on buses and in bus shelters.
Russell Viner, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said advertising was “one of the leading contributors for the growth of child obesity”, adding: “It is therefore vital, especially in cities like London where deprivation is high, that it is tackled.”
