Lundbeck’s Cipralex helps treat obsessive-compulsive disorder
Lundbeck’s Cipralex has been found to help sufferers of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) reduce their symptoms.
A study found that participants who were given Cipralex found that symptoms of their OCD improved substantially. Patients on placebos were 2.7 times more likely to suffer a relapse, compared to those on Cipralex.
OCD affects ten per cent of individuals who suffer from anxiety disorders. Sufferers experience repetitive thoughts that are often disturbing, which are often followed by compulsive behaviours in reaction.
“We are pleased to have very convincing data demonstrating the effectiveness of Cipralex in the treatment of patients with OCD,” said Anders Gersel Pedersen, head of drug development at Lundbeck. “Patients suffering from this condition often also have to suffer from considerable stigmatization.”
Lundbeck are pursuing approval of the drug for use in cases of OCD within Europe. It is currently available for panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, depression and generalised anxiety disorder.
