Maquet warns of defective roller pumps in the UK

Maquet has warned British healthcare professionals that the hand cranks for some of its roller pumps in heart-lung circuit devices could be defective.

Affecting new Jostra HL20/HL30 models, the hand cranks have too large a steel tip, meaning the crank will not fit in the hole in the roller pump head designed to accept the head.

Maquet said this makes hand cranking the heart-lung circuit devices “impossible”.

The Swedish medical equipment manufacturer has notified the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, which said that it is reviewing Maquet’s field safety corrective action notification, with the possibility of further advice to follow.

Maquet has asked affected users to return the defective hand cranks, while new, correctly fitted ones can be supplied free of charge.

Recently, the company announced that its SERVO-i ventilators are now compatible for use in MRI scanner rooms.

This enables patients to be transported from an intensive care unit (ICU) bed to the MRI scanner without the need to change ventilators.

Patient ventilation in MRI scanners can prove problematic in the case of ICU patients due to the restrictions on the use of magnetic metals, which can be dangerous due to the magnetic force of the scanners.
