Medicaroid Wins CE Mark for Hinotori Surgical Robot
Medicaroid has secured the CE mark for its Hinotori surgical robot, opening the door to a European commercial launch. Announced on 10 July 2026, the approval covers procedures across urology, general surgery, gynaecology and thoracic surgery, and gives the Kobe-based joint venture between Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Sysmex a foothold in a market long dominated by Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci platform.
Medicaroid became the first Japanese domestic manufacturer to secure regulatory approval for a robotic surgery system in Japan in 2020, positioning it as one of the few credible non-US challengers to Intuitive Surgical’s global market leadership. Hinotori has since secured regulatory approvals in Singapore (2023), Malaysia (2024) and Vietnam, with approximately 20,000 procedures performed globally to date. Medicaroid established a European base of operations in Germany in 2020 and filed for CE mark certification in March 2025.
The company continues to evaluate the US market opportunity but has not yet filed for FDA clearance. Parent Kawasaki Heavy Industries has been building broader momentum around the platform, opening a development hub in San Jose in May 2026 in collaboration with Nvidia, Analog Devices, Microsoft and Fujitsu, with an initial focus on healthcare applications including Hinotori. Kawasaki has also partnered with French surgical education institute IRCAD to support clinician training. Intuitive Surgical has publicly identified Medicaroid as one of the competitors bringing new pressure to the robot-assisted surgery market.
The commercial signal is a genuinely credible Asian entrant into the European surgical robotics market at a moment of accelerating competitive pressure on Intuitive Surgical. With Medtronic’s Hugo, J&J’s Ottava and CMR Surgical’s Versius all working their way through European hospital procurement, Hinotori arrives into an increasingly contested market where Japanese-scale engineering credibility could shift pricing dynamics considerably.
