Medtronic acquires Ablation Frontiers

9th February 2009

Medtronic has completed its acquisition of medical device company Ablation Frontiers (AF).

AF existed as a privately-held business and was bought by Medtronic via an affiliated entity. It will operate within the cardiac rhythm disease management division of its new owner alongside another acquisition, CryoCath Technologies.

Both will work towards expanding the section of the business focused on solutions for atrial fibrillation.

“Medtronic’s goal is to be the physician partner of choice for atrial fibrillation,” the company said in a statement.

It will do this by offering “simpler, safer [and] effective” therapies to clinicians and patients, the group added.

The end of last month saw Medtronic announce it was expanding its CURE-AF programme to Canada and Europe.

It aims to collect international post-market information on how effective irrigated cardiac ablation is when used alongside radio frequency energy in patients with atrial fibrillation.

According to Medtronic, more proven therapies are needed for this condition.
