Medtronic announces acquisition of Medina Medical
Medtronic has announced the acquisition of Medina Medical, as part of its growth strategy of therapeutic innovation.
Based in California, Medina Medical is focused on commercialising cutting-edge treatments for vascular abnormalities of the brain, including cerebral aneurysms.
Its leading product is the Medina Embolisation Device, an intrasaccular 3D mesh implant that fills the inside of a brain aneurysm. It provides a scaffold across the aneurysm neck, conforms to the shape of the aneurysm, and reduces blood flow.
The device has already received European CE Mark approval, but has not yet been made commercially available in the US.
Brett Wall, president of the neurovascular division within Medtronic's restorative therapies group, said: "Medina Medical's breakthrough technology makes it a natural fit with our neurovascular portfolio, further strengthening our haemorrhagic stroke portfolio."
This comes after the firm purchased Twelve, the developer of a new transcatheter mitral valve replacement device, last week.
