Medtronic completes takeover of HeartWare International

Medtronic has announced the completion of its acquisition of the medical technology company HeartWare International.

The company manufactures miniaturised implantable heart pumps or ventricular assist devices (VADs) for treating patients with advanced heart failure, with its flagship product, the HVAD System, featuring the world's smallest full-support VAD. 

This device is indicated in the US for the treatment of refractory end-stage left-ventricular heart failure patients awaiting a heart transplant, and has also been approved in Europe for long-term use in patients at risk of death from refractory end-stage heart failure.

Medtronic estimates that the global VAD market is currently worth approximately $800 million (606.09 million pounds), with considerable growth anticipated for the coming years.

Following the completion of the deal, HeartWare will become part of the heart failure business within Medtronic's broader cardiac rhythm and heart failure division.

Dr David Steinhaus, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's heart failure business, said: "Not only does the current HeartWare portfolio expand Medtronic leadership across the heart failure continuum, its product pipeline – when married with our expertise – can result in progressively less-invasive heart pumps that have the potential to benefit even more patients."
