Medtronic product launch described as significant advancement

Medtronic senior vice-president Bob Blankemeyer has described a new power console launched by the company as a “significant advancement” on previous products available within the field.

The integrated power console (IPC) platform is the first one by Medtronic for use in surgery for ear, nose and throat (ENT) as well as cranial and spinal.

For the latter two, the console powers the company’s Midas Rex Legend EHS and Legend EHS Stylus drills, as well as the Midas Rex Spine Shaver, which is used to remove tissue.

Among its features is a foot pedal with three buttons and designed not to slip, as well as a touchscreen interface.

Mr Blankemeyer said that Medtronic’s products for the years to come will be designed to be compatible with the IPC platform.

“It is our first, true cross-specialty power platform and represents a significant advancement from power consoles previously available in the neurologic, spine and ENT markets,” he stated.

Medtronic has also announced that clinical trials are underway for its self-expanding (SE) Complete SE stent.

This product is for use in treating peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

According to the company, roughly eight million people in the US suffer from PAD within their lower extremities but many do not realise it.
