Medtronic receives CE Mark for CoreValve System

22nd August 2011

Medtronic has announced that its groundbreaking 31mm Medtronic CoreValve System has received European CE Mark accreditation.

The device is the only transcatheter aortic valve available in the world that can treat patients with larger valve openings of up to 29mm without the need for surgery, as well as being the largest transcatheter valve on the market.

Based on the company's self-expanding CoreValve platform, this new offering can be compressed into a small delivery system and deployed through the same method as smaller versions of the device.

Individual sizing of valves plays a key role in achieving optimal patient blood flow and reducing adverse events, making this launch an important new development for clinicians.

Dr John Liddicoat, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's structural heart business, said: "The new CoreValve size may afford many patients with severe aortic stenosis their first chance at a treatment alternative beyond optimal medical management or open-heart surgery."

Last week, the company announced positive new data from a study of its InterStim Therapy offering, showing its benefits in relieving chronic faecal incontinence.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800707329-ADNFCR
