Medtronic reports positive trial data for IN.PACT Admiral drug-coated balloon

Medtronic has announced new clinical trial data showing the benefits its IN.PACT Admiral drug-coated balloon can provide in the treatment of peripheral arterial disease.

Data from two studies demonstrated the strong 12-month performance of the device in a subset of patients with long lesions in the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries. The results were remarkably consistent with those from similar studies, regardless of lesion length.

These findings came from the IN.PACT Global Study, the largest and most rigorous post-market evaluation ever of any peripheral artery intervention, as well as the smaller DEB SFA-LONG Study.

Positive findings such as these have already helped the device to secure US and European regulatory approval.

Dr Mark Turco, medical director of the aortic and peripheral vascular business at Medtronic, said: "The latest data on the IN.PACT Admiral drug-coated balloon adds to the growing body of evidence that supports the device's use as a treatment for atherosclerotic lesions in the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries."

During the recently-concluded 2015 fiscal year, the company reported year-on-year growth of 19 percent, thanks to the positive impact of its recent acquisition of Covidien.
