Medtronic rod system used live on internet broadcast

Medtronic has announced that a surgical procedure broadcast live over the internet will feature the use of its CD Horizon Legacy Peek rod system.

This system is used to keep the spine stable when conducting an arthrodesis procedure while reducing stress on screw-bone anchor points.

Furthermore, the system is also radiolucent, which results in a reduction of artefacts in medical imaging scans conducted by physicians.

Due to air online on June 12th 2007, the lumbar fusion surgery performed by doctors Todd Lanman and Russ Nockels on the OR Live website will feature the use of the company’s rod system that aims to facilitate a sleek surgical procedure.

The CD Horizon Legacy Peek rod system comprises of polyetheretherketone rods and can be used in conjunction with CD Horizon spinal system pedicle screws and the Mast Quadrant retractor set.

“The CD Horizon Legacy Peek rod dynamically stabilises the affected segment while allowing for a streamlined surgical technique that preserves much of the natural anatomy,” the company reports.

In March 2007, Medtronic announced that an appeals court had won in its favour in a case against Cross Medical Products – a subsidiary of Biomet – relating to the claim that its multi-axial pedicle screw products violated that company’s patents.
