Medtronic study shows benefits of insulin pumps for diabetes treatment

18th April 2016

Medtronic has highlighted clinical data demonstrating the benefits its insulin pumps can provide for people with type 2 diabetes.

The OpT2mise study was the largest randomised controlled trial to compare the efficacy and safety of insulin pump therapy versus multiple daily insulin injections for poorly-controlled type 2 diabetes patients.

It was shown that MiniMed's insulin pumps safely provided significant, sustainable and reproducible improvements in glucose control in comparison to the injection-based treatment approach.

After 12 months, patients that crossed over to MiniMed insulin pumps after an initial six months of injections greatly improved their glucose control while using 19 percent less insulin.

Dr Francine Kaufman, chief medical officer and vice-president of global, clinical and medical affairs for Medtronic Diabetes, said: "The results of the OpT2mise trial, which is the largest study of its kind, will help us expand access to insulin pump therapy as a standard-of-care treatment for the growing number of insulin-taking type 2 diabetes patients."

This comes after the firm recently reported positive data from a study showing the effectiveness of its Arctic Front Cryoballoon catheter family.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801816782-ADNFCR
