Merck Serono and Philochem ally on fertility research
Merck Serono is entering into an alliance with biotechnology firm Philochem on new research in the field of human fertility.
The companies are looking to develop non-invasive diagnostic tests to objectively judge oocyte and embryo quality, which could be of benefit to infertile women seeking in-vitro fertilisation therapy.
To support this aim, Philochem will provide Merck Serono with monoclonal antibodies that will be used to establish molecular biomarkers determining oocyte and embryo quality.
Philochem was selected for this partnership based on its reputation in isolating specific binding molecules.
Dr Eveline Trachsel, director of research at Philochem, said: "We are delighted to enter into this collaborative agreement with Merck Serono in the area of fertility and we look forward to contributing to the advancement of in-vitro fertilisation techniques."
Earlier this month, it was announced that Merck Serono will be partnering with fellow pharmaceutical company Sanofi-aventis on research into new methods of combating cancer development.
