MHRA 2023 Report Outlines Pharma Safeguarding Success

In its most recent company report, the MHRA (Medicines and Products Healthcare Regulatory Agency) notes that it has increased public safety by introducing 729 additional generic medications to pharmacies in the UK.

CEO of the MHRA, June Raine, said that this is “a landmark in our evolution as an agency” and defined it as a “positive shift in how we engage and involve patients”, collaborating “closely with partners to ensure the supply of vital medicinal products.”

It has authorised more than 100,000 drug alerts, allowing individuals to obtain necessary medications that were previously inaccessible in the UK. In addition, they have visited and assessed more than 700 manufacturing facilities, laboratories, and study locations.

The organisations has been “instrumental in mitigating the impact of drug shortages”, one example being the provision of antibiotics in the Strep A epidemic, which resulted in 516 deaths across the UK.

Their criminal enforcement division has been successful in their efforts to safeguard the population against criminal behaviour, removing almost 7 million doses of unlawfully traded medication from being distributed, and bringing down 8,000 websites that were engaged in illicit selling.

According to the MHRA, its efforts resulted in effective convictions, 216-month prison sentences, and “the denial of £850,000 in criminal profits.”

“We continue to protect public health by monitoring and responding to important patient safety issues related to the use of medicines and by prompt action to deal with faulty medicinal products and combat trade in non-compliant and illegal health products,”
