Nanomesh effectively delivers Antibiotics
Researchers at Flinders University in Australia and collaborators in Japan have been studying the effectiveness of adding antibiotics Colistin and Vancomycin to nanomesh pieces with gold particles.
A technique known as electrospinning, embeds the antibiotics into the mesh, where a high voltage is applied between a needle connected to a syringe and the collector plate, causing the polymer solution to forma cone, and a jet of liquid is released due to the electrostatic forces.
According to Flinders Institute for Nanoscience and Technology Associate Professor Ingo Koeper, The results from the 14 day trial suggests dosages could be reduced in comparison to traditional drugs. “Even though the dosage is reduced, the concentration of antibiotics delivered can be higher, which will ensure that bacteria cannot survive. The research is a proof of concept, and suggests an opportunity for another route to be used to administer antibiotics.”
