Nanotech-equipped electronic tattoo could aid health monitoring

Researchers have developed a new temporary electronic tattoo equipped with nanotechnology that could make it easier than ever to monitor vital signs.

The Tel Aviv University team have created a device consisting of a carbon electrode, an adhesive surface that attaches to the skin and a nanotechnology-based conductive polymer coating to enhance the electrode's performance.

It offers the ability to record a strong continuous signal for hours without irritating the skin, making it possible to monitor expression through electric signals received from facial muscles, thereby producing data on the person's emotional state.

Moreover, it can be used to assess the health of muscles and nerve cells, a function with many potential therapeutic applications, such as monitoring the muscle activity of patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

The tattoo could also be used to indicate the alertness of drivers on the road, improve muscle control in those recovering after a stroke or brain injury, or to move artificial limbs with remaining muscles.

Professor Yael Hanein, head of Tel Aviv University's Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, said: "Our tattoo permits patients to carry on with their daily routines, while the electrode monitors their muscle and nerve activity. The idea is: stick it on and forget about it."
