Nearly Half of UK Children Miss NHS Dental Visits in the Past Year
Recent data from the House of Commons Library reveals a worrying trend: nearly half (44.6%) of UK children haven’t visited an NHS dentist in over a year. This equates to more than 5.35 million children, an increase of almost half a million since before the pandemic. This trend suggests significant implications for children’s dental health and the broader NHS dental services.
The comprehensive analysis, covering NHS dentists and dental practices across various constituencies, highlights stark differences in dental care accessibility. Hackney, one of the poorest performing areas, saw 62.2% of children missing their annual NHS dental check-up. Other regions struggling with dental access included Herefordshire, Portsmouth, and Thurrock. In contrast, areas like the City of London, Redcar and Cleveland, and Blackburn with Darwen showed more encouraging figures, with a much smaller percentage of children missing out on dental visits.
Additionally, over half of UK adults (59.7%) haven’t seen an NHS dentist in the past year, up from 50.6% in 2019. The worst adult dental care access was noted in Herefordshire, Plymouth, and Tower Hamlets, whereas Wigan, Sunderland, and Redcar and Cleveland reported better access rates.
Lord Ara Darzi’s independent investigation underscores the critical state of NHS dental services, despite an adequate number of dentists in England. The disconnect lies in the unwillingness to undertake NHS work. His findings call for urgent reforms to ensure timely, high-quality dental care for both children and adults.
