New ALS treatment pathway derived from zebrafish research
Researchers have discovered a molecule that could be instrumental in developing new treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), following a study involving zebrafish.
Scientists from the VIB life sciences research institute and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have used the fish as a model for discovering genes that play a role in the disease's mechanism.
It was found that the EphA4 receptor acted as a genetic factor modifying the clinical picture of ALS, with elimination of this receptor among zebrafish subjects leading to disappearance of the illness.
This molecule was also found to be associated with the prevention of recovery from neuronal damage and reduced life expectancy among those producing large quantities.
According to the researchers, this is a potentially vital discovery in the study of ALS and also demonstrates the benefits of using small model organisms such as zebrafish.
