New biomaterial ‘offers long-lasting relief for sensitive teeth’
Researchers in Taiwan have developed an innovative biomaterial that offers the potential to help rebuild worn enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity in a long-lasting way.
Carried out by National Taiwan University, the research focused on a novel paste, based on elements found in teeth such as calcium and phosphorus, that represents a more durable way of addressing sensitivity than the current options.
Generally, when a tooth's enamel degrades, it exposes porous tubes and results in underlying nerves becoming more vulnerable to hot and cold. In tests using dogs, the new material was shown to plug these exposed tubes more deeply than other treatments.
At the moment, most patients affected by this issue use treatments such as special toothpastes to block the openings of the tubes, but these generally create only a superficial seal that is worn away by daily brushing and chewing.
Tooth sensitivity not only causes sharp pains, but can also lead to more serious dental problems. Common causes include excessive brushing, teeth grinding, gum disease and receding gums.
