New funding for drug and alcohol recovery services announced

More than 50 drug and alcohol recovery services across England will benefit from a new ten million pound funding injection from Public Health England.

The government body has run a fresh round of capital investment in this area for the second consecutive year, following a successful programme in 2013-14 that saw various innovative recovery-focused projects receiving funding.

Many of this year's funded projects focus on providing tailored education, training, skills and employment support to people in recovery, as well as schemes that provide safe and secure accommodation for those affected.

People recovering from addiction often have extremely limited skills or employment experience and issues finding stable accommodation, making schemes of this kind a key priority.

Rosanna O'Connor, director of alcohol, drugs and tobacco at Public Health England, said: "Drug and alcohol misuse is a complex issue that causes significant harm to society. I am hugely encouraged by the level of commitment to improving recovery services, both from within the sector and among local authorities."

This is the fourth wave of government capital investment funding to support drug and alcohol dependency schemes of this kind.
