New funding to bolster number of GP-based clinical pharmacists

New funding has been announced by NHS England to increase the number of clinical pharmacists working in GP practices.

A total of 112 million pounds is being allocated to recruit a further 1,500 clinical pharmacists working in general practice by 2020-21, meeting a commitment set out in the recent General Practice Forward View.

This new funding is provided based on the success of an initial 15 million pound pilot scheme, which proved popular enough with patients and GP practices that the funding was doubled by NHS England in November 2015.

As a result of this, more than 490 clinical pharmacists are now working in approximately 650 practices across 90 pilot sites, offering specialist advice and freeing up GPs for other appointments, thereby reducing the numbers of people seeking emergency care.

Simon Stevens, NHS England chief executive, said: "For patients with long-term conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, regularly reviewing your medicines with a pharmacist can cut side effects and improve the effectiveness of treatment."
