New government calorie reduction campaign to help tackle obesity
The government has announced the launch of a new campaign to reduce excessive calorie intake in order to bring down obesity rates.
As part of these efforts, Public Health England and the Department of Health and Social Care will be challenging the food industry to reduce calories in products consumed by families by 20 percent by 2024.
This will be accompanied by a new public health campaign called One You, which encourages adults to consume 400 calories at breakfast and 600 for lunch and dinner. At present, it is estimated that adults consume 200 to 300 excess calories each day.
Government evidence also indicates that overweight or obese boys and girls consume up to 500 and 290 excess calories each day respectively. It is estimated that a significant number of premature deaths could be prevented by helping to bring these numbers down.
Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England, said: "Industry can help families by finding innovative ways to lower the calories in the food we all enjoy and promoting UK business leadership on the world stage in tackling obesity."
