New GP salary supplementation scheme announced

The government has launched a package of measures designed to strengthen general practice, including a new salary supplementation scheme for trainee GPs.

To be introduced in 2018, the Targeted Enhanced Recruitment Scheme will provide a one-off payment of 20,000 pounds to attract trainees to work in areas of the country where training places have been unfilled for a number of years.

This initiative will be accompanied by a Health Education England-led scheme to make sure as many as possible of the 1,500 additional medical training places to be funded from next year are in priority areas, including rural and coastal communities.

Additionally, new flexible working arrangements are to be offered for GPs considering retirement, including the opportunity to take on mentoring and leadership roles, while an international recruitment office will be set up by NHS England to help recruit doctors from overseas.

Finally, a consultation will be launched on the regulation of physician associates to provide further clarity on the scope of the role, with an eye to determining how these staff can better support healthcare teams.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "By introducing targeted support for vulnerable areas and tackling head-on critical issues such as higher indemnity fees and the recruitment and retention of more doctors, we can strengthen and secure general practice for the future."
