New human eye-inspired metalens offers advances in imaging
Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a new silicon-based adaptive metalens to provide advanced imaging capabilities.
Alan She, a graduate student at SEAS and first author of the paper, commented: "This research combines breakthroughs in artificial muscle technology with metalens technology to create a tunable metalens that can change its focus in real time, just like the human eye."
The new metalens is essentially an electronically-controlled artificial eye. Its polymer film mounting enables it to automatically stretch to simultaneously focus and correct issues of astigmatism and image shift.
All intellectual property supporting the new metalens has been protected by the Harvard Office of Technology Development and researchers are now examining opportunities for commercialisation of the new device.
