New medical camera ‘can see through the human body’

Scientists have developed a new camera with the capability to look through the human body, which potentially offers a wide range of medical uses.

Developed by the University of Edinburgh, the camera uses advanced technology that can detect individual particles of light called photons, meaning it is able to detect light emitted by the endoscopes used to investigate internal conditions.

Early tests have demonstrated that the prototype system is able to track the location of a light source through 20 centimetres of tissue under normal light conditions, as well as being usable at a patient's bedside.

Previously, the only way to track the location of an endoscope in the body in order to guide it to the right place has been by using X-rays or other expensive methods, but this new system could greatly facilitate this otherwise complex process.

Kev Dhaliwal, professor of molecular imaging and healthcare technology at the University of Edinburgh, said: "The ability to see a device's location is crucial for many applications in healthcare, as we move forwards with minimally invasive approaches to treating disease."
