New multi-view microscope ‘can offer enhanced imaging capabilities’
US researchers have developed a new multi-view microscope that could potentially double the resolution of cellular images.
A team from the US National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and the University of Chicago have developed a triple-view microscope setup that captures visual data from three different angles.
The researchers added another lens to supplement their earlier dual-view microscope, with the extra lens imaging the sample from below, allowing even more light emitted from the sample to be captured.
It was also possible to design and implement algorithms to merge the three images into one, a process called deconvolution. This allows for the creation of a sharper, clearer 3D image than previously possible.
The new microscope offers double the resolution of fluorescence microscopy and could make it possible to see how some of the smallest functions in the human body work, such as how a virus enters a cell and moves around once inside.
Dr Hari Shroff, chief of the NIBIB high-resolution optical imaging team, said: "The microscopes being developed here, along with concurrent advances in computational imaging, help to give researchers the tools they need to solve some of medicine's most challenging problems."
