New pay agreement reached for NHS paramedics

A new pay deal has been reached for NHS paramedics that will give them an opportunity to earn more over the course of their careers.

The Department of Health, NHS Employers and ambulance unions have agreed paramedics will be re-banded nationally from band 5 to band 6 where appropriate, recognising the increasing responsibility associated with this role.

Staff whose job description is matched to the new band 6 profile will move from a pay range of 21,000 to 28,000 pounds to a higher category starting at 26,000 pounds, potentially rising to 35,000 pounds.

New paramedics appointed after September this year, meanwhile, will have a maximum two-year consolidation of a learning period at band 5 before moving to band 6.

Initial funding will be agreed by the Department of Health, NHS England and NHS Improvement, with pay provision in future years to be linked to agreements between ambulance trusts and commissioners following the Urgent and Emergency Care Review.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "Our dedicated paramedics do a vital job helping patients when they need it most, so I'm very pleased that we have agreed a new pay deal with unions."
