New report highlights barriers putting people off seeing their GPs

A new study from Cancer Research UK has shed light on the wide range of factors that dissuade people from speaking to their GPs about potentially troubling symptoms.

The survey of almost 2,000 British people revealed that difficulties getting an appointment with a particular doctor was one of the most common perceived barriers to seeing a GP, with 42 percent of respondents citing this issue.

Getting a convenient appointment time was raised as a problem by the same percentage of people, while a dislike of having to talk to GP receptionists about symptoms was also raised by 40 percent of those surveyed.

Women were more likely to report problems of these kinds, while those from poorer socio-economic backgrounds were more likely to worry about what the GP might find, having tests and talking about symptoms.

This reluctance to speak to doctors could be a significant problem, as it means that early signs of potentially serious conditions may be being missed.

Dr Richard Roope, Cancer Research UK's GP expert, said: "Diagnosing cancer early is something we have to take seriously, so anything that might prevent people from getting their symptoms checked needs to be overcome."
