New software opens door for easier creation of splints for arthritis patients
Tailored wrist splints for rheumatoid arthritis patients could be created simply and quickly in future thanks to a new software innovation from the University of Loughborough.
A team from the university's design school have created a computer software concept that will enable clinicians with no experience in computer-aided design to produce custom-made 3D-printed wrist splints that can provide joint protection, rest and pain relief.
Splints will be made by scanning a patient's arm, with a 3D model designed automatically based on the scan. They can be any colour, feature multiple materials, have a lattice design to aid ventilation and any type of fastening the patient requires.
It is thought these splints would be cheaper to produce, as well as being lighter, more comfortable and less prone to cause sweating than current options.
Dr Richard Bibb from the University of Loughborough Design School said: "We are in the development phase. The research has proved that this is desirable and the clinicians want it. We know there's lots of potential."
Rheumatoid arthritis is estimated to affect more than 580,000 people in England and Wales, occurring more frequently in women than men.
