New study highlights evolutionary causes of back problems
Variations in human spinal structure attributable to evolution have been identified as a contributing factor in back problems for certain individuals.
The study from Canada's Simon Fraser University compared the vertebrae of humans, chimpanzees and orangutans, finding that some people's spinal structures have more in common with chimps than healthy humans.
Because their backs are not as well adapted to bipedal locomotion, they are at an elevated risk of intervertebral disc herniation, a widespread cause of back pain.
It is hoped that this information will be useful for interpreting medical scans of spinal disease, and to predict individual risk of intervertebral disc herniation.
Postdoctoral researcher Kimberly Plomp from Simon Fraser University said the findings "indicate why some individuals are more prone to back problems. This may help in preventative care by identifying individuals, such as athletes, who may be at risk of developing the condition".
It can take about four to six weeks to recover from a slipped disc, with treatment usually involving a combination of physical therapy and medication.
