New study uncovers drug resistance mechanism for superbugs
New research from the University of Edinburgh has cast new light on the process through which superbugs are able to develop antibiotic resistance.
By mapping out the molecular structure of restriction enzymes found within many bacteria, scientists were able to observe how harmful organisms are able to control the speed at which they absorb DNA.
Models were created to show how enzymes disable foreign DNA while safeguarding the bacteria's own genetic material, allowing the organism to acquire beneficial traits that can prevent antibiotic drugs from being effective.
This study was conducted using e. coli bacteria, but the results could also apply to other common superbugs, including MRSA.
Dr David Dryden of the University of Edinburgh's school of chemistry said: "We have known for some time that these enzymes are very effective in protecting bacteria from attack by other species. Now we have painted a picture of how this occurs."
Antimicrobial resistance is becoming an increasing area focus for global healthcare providers, with European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control highlighting the dangers during European Antibiotic Awareness Day last November.
