New ten-year programme announced for carers

The government has announced a new ten-year programme which aims to give carers increased support with employment, help them to stay healthy and have more short breaks.

According to the Department of Health, 225 million pounds will be invested in the new strategy to improve the lives of carers in the UK.

In total, 38 million pounds will be spent to help carers enter or rejoin the job market, with more accessible and flexible skills training for carers and increased guidance for employers.

Investment of 150 million pounds will be given to expand short breaks for carers over a two-year period, while six million pounds will be spent to enhance support for young carers.

Additionally, the government has pledged to pilot annual health checks for carers and train GPs to recognise their role.

Ivan Lewis, health minister, said: “In a society where an increasing number of us are caring for ageing parents or sick and disabled relatives, it is right that we recognise carers are at the heart of 21st century families and communities.”

He added that carers have told the government that they want the right to a life of their own as well as their caring responsibilities and a support system that is on their side.

In January 2008, the government announced plans to review the criteria outlining the rights to receive care services.
