New UK funding announced for research into healthcare in poorer countries

The Department of Health has announced a new package of funding for research to benefit human health in low and middle-income countries.

UK universities are being asked to apply to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) for a share of the 60 million pound funding pot, with awards to be made in April 2017 and distributed over the following five years.

Proposals pertaining to areas of research that are currently neglected will be prioritised, with examples including non-communicable disease, mental health, tobacco control, road safety, surgery, and health and applied social or economic research.

Two separate schemes have been established, with the first intended for universities and research institutes with an existing track record of internationally-recognised research who wish to consolidate and expand this work.

The second, meanwhile, is for existing specialist academic groups who wish to expand into the field of global health, especially in areas where there is a shortage of research.

Nicola Blackwood, minister for public health and innovation, said: "These funds will allow our universities to continue to make great strides in research excellence. I look forward to seeing the exciting projects this money will support."
