New Welsh Neurological Conditions Delivery Plan launched

The Welsh government has announced the launch of a new Neurological Conditions Delivery Plan that will ensure people affected by these conditions receive high-quality care.

It provides a framework for action by health boards and their partners to plan and deliver high-end services, raise awareness of neurological conditions, improve the speed of their diagnosis and offer more support and information to patients, especially young people.

Around 500,000 people in Wales are affected by a neurological condition, which may be caused by damage to the brain, spinal column or nerves as a result of illness or injury. Such problems are often chronic, affecting both patients and their families.

The Welsh government will work closely with local health boards to deliver on the new commitments by 2017.

Welsh health minister Mark Drakeford said: "This plan provides the necessary guidance and clarifies required standards. We must provide excellent care, whether that is through timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment or continuing support."

This is one of a number of new health initiatives launched in Wales this week, which also include a pilot scheme to reduce cancer treatment waiting times and a pledge to reform the social care sector.
