NHS England in biggest challenge tackling diabetes in the UK

3rd May 2018

NHS England is looking ahead to a better NHS with a Five Year Forward View, aiming to deliver a better and more responsive NHS in England. Diabetes has become a priority because it is estimated that almost 9% of the population will have diabetes by 2030. “Tackling diabetes is one of the biggest healthcare challenges of our time, as the number of people with Type 2 diabetes continues to rise”, states Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS England’s National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity.

New programmes and frameworks are already in place to help act against diabetes, with the diabetes prevention programme currently covering 50% of the country and looking to expand to 75% of the population. Funding is in place for another 12 months in the original 27 sites and the programme aims to cover the whole of the country eventually.
