NHS England makes new appointment to improve use of technology

15th February 2018

NHS England and NHS Improvement have announced a new appointment to improve the use of technology and data in the health service.

Dr Simon Eccles, a practising hospital consultant in emergency medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, will succeed Professor Keith McNeil in the position of chief clinical information officer for health and care.

His other roles include clinical director for emergency care at NHS England, London, and senior responsible owner for NHS Mail and Interoperability.

Dr Eccles said this is a "really exciting time" to be working on digital transformation, particularly in the NHS, where there are "many important changes" on the horizon.

He added: "Digital health is a fast-paced arena, and we must ensure parties work together to drive improvements for patients, who will remain my focus as I move from hospital work to driving the NHS IT agenda."

The appointment was made following open competition by a panel that included board members from NHS England, NHS Digital and the Department of Health and Social Care.

Matthew Swindells, national director of operations and information at NHS England, said Dr Eccles will join an "exceptional team" that is focused on driving forward the health service's IT strategy and delivering better outcomes for patients.
